SCENT

of

HOME-LAND

Scent of Homeland contains an astonishing 12 notes with names that sing of rituals long past in that chaotic metropolis. It bares itself in layers/like lush plants of Golestan Garden’s every court unlocks another charm.

It opens in a soft rosy walk along its smoky streets, smoldering oil of bay leaf, dusty grasses covering surrounding mountains, muddy and bitter. Then plant notes take over and for a brief time, it turns medicinal. As the dust recedes, jasmine notes join the clay and muddy aroma of the brick walls. It glows like the first rain after a long drought season touching the earth. The thirsty soil reflects it’s potency to the air!

As it warms up, the lemon notes of Baharnarenj, come forward, but the burnt caramelized scent of saffron plays in the background, and the hearty fragrance of rose returns. Something mildly spicy, possibly cardamom takes center stage for a few moments. As it dries down, the thick layer of apricot blends with exotic flowers of silver olive and fills the air.

WHAT

SCENT and Memories

WHERE

Homeland

"Scent of Homeland" is an art project mapping the scents of the founder’s and her sister's birthplace. A narrative of memory of a scent through multi-sensorial art projects, which engaged the collaboration of a collection of Abbas Kiarostami’s photography with his son. A very personal and heartfelt project that they stopped when their father was passing.

This work now is linked to the founder's grandmother who manifested in her dream holding a candle and shining as lady Sun. In her grandmother’s honor, Taraneh dedicated the “Scent of Homeland” project to all her ancestors… in the hope of breaking the chains that once bound her to the traumatic story of her dad passing in her birthplace. She now lights a candle, with a scent she created for her homeland.
